The history of the Camerons of Locheil is inseparably bound up with the history of the clan, but it may be mentioned here that in 1528 the lands of the “Captain of Clan Cameron” were erected into the barony of Locheil by a the first time charter granted by king James V in which the “Captain” is for the first time described as “of Locheil.” During the time of Sir Ewan, 17th of Locheil, the castle of Achnacarry was built, and has remained the home of the Camerons of Locheil until the present day, although the original house was destroyed in 1746, and the present castle was not finished until about 1837. Sir Ewan, who built the original mansion, was the celebrated chief of the clan who waged war continually against the troops of Cromwell, and in the end the Camerons were allowed to retain their arms on their promise to live peaceably, and “no oath was required of Locheil but his word of honour.”
Donald, 19th of Locheil, “the Gentle Locheil” whose bravery and heroism was amply proved during “the ’45,” was of a gentle nature and endeavoured to ameliorate the horrors of war as far as possible. He is said to have saved the city of Glasgow from being pillaged during its occupation by the Jacobite army in 1745.
