The progenitor of the Camerons of Erracht was Ewan, son of Ewan, Chief of the Clan Cameron, by his second wife Marjory MacKintosh, in the first half of the 16th century.
At the Jacobite rising of 1745, Donald, 7th of Erracht, followed his chief Locheil, and was second in command of the Clan Cameron when Prince Charles raised his standard at Glenfinnan. After the battle of Culloden he was a fugitive for 3 years. His eldest son, Allan, after service in America returned home and in 1793 raised the original 79th regiment, Cameron Highlanders, and was appointed Lieut-Colonel Commandant, and commanded the regiment throughout the Flanders campaign of 1794-1795. In 1797 the regiment was disbanded and many of the men joined the Black Watch. A year later Colonel Cameron raised another regiment in the Highlands also numbered the 79th. In 1804 a second battalion was formed with which the Colonel served in the Low Countries and in the Penninsular War.
The 79th Cameron Highlanders wore a tartan now known as Erracht Cameron, designed specially by Colonel Cameron’s mother, who was a daughter of Ranald MacDonell of Keppoch and was composed of a combination of the Cameron tartan with that of the MacDonell of Keppoch.
